Technical Difficulties: Reality vs Fantasy [NSFW]

Untitled-1

vs Realism vs Authenticity vs Aliens vs Monsters vs Pirates

[As always Technical Difficulties is a segment where I lose my shit and rant, so please, don’t see this as some kind of high-quality article]

Two Technical Difficulties one after another, oh boy.

Capture

I can’t let this one go… I tried… but I can’t.

Really Erik? The breasts are too large for athleticism? You don’t have a problem with the dinosaurs, aliens, or atlantean mutants?

No, those are fine, her tits are too big to accurately jump.

I mean really, video game realism?

tumblr_mj5zshMAMN1rglf7po2_500

Protip: This character is not real. Her boobies are not real.

Why does the size of her mammaries insult you? What exactly is “worst possible fan-service”? Is any fan-service bad or only this specific one and if so, why?

Tits = bad? Large tits = bad? Sexy is bad? Titillating is bad? Sex is bad?

What, how and why?

In what context?

I’m honestly confused here.

Do you people understand the difference between fantasy and reality?

Video games are fantasy, they are interactive fiction. The characters are not real, they are, by their very nature, fictional. You can not “objectify” a fictional character, they are literally objects (narrative, literary, visual, w/e)

It’s not like I haven’t written about this before, but is this problem of distinguishing between fantasy and reality suddenly getting worse?

I mean whats the difference between Lara Croft backflipping over dinosaurs c.a. 1996 and Lara Croft fighting Samurai Oni in 2013? They are both impossible scenarios. They are both fantasy. How do you decide what is “appropriate” fantasy? I mean Bayonetta and Samus had no problems with backflips either, are they illogical and insulting?

In that other “article” I’ve made fun of this.

Lara 1996 and Lara 2013 are very different indeed.

In 2013 Lara has to be rescued, repeatedly by others, including the player, and I quote (Kotaku interview):

“When people play Lara, they don’t really project themselves into the character,” Rosenberg told me at E3 last week when I asked if it was difficult to develop for a female protagonist.
“They’re more like ‘I want to protect her.’ There’s this sort of dynamic of ‘I’m going to this adventure with her and trying to protect her.'”

In 1996 Lara is a fully autonomous character. She is self sufficient, has freedom of movement, is independent and enjoys agency.

Lara 2013 has no agency, all you do is lead her with your protective manly hand of benevolent protection until things happen to her and then you watch, slightly uncomfortable, and press a button to rescue her.

THAT is insulting.

Do you want to tell me that the 1996-2003 Lara is more insulting because her boobies had a programming error that was left in? Because as a boy when I looked at the pixels my shorts formed a tent?

Isn’t that backwards?

If anything Lara 2013 should have featured on the #1 spot of Anita Sarkeesians “Damsel In Distress” video (at least it would have had merit then).

WTF is going on?

Clearly she could have never defeated Big Boss with those tits.

samus-aran-brawl

How does Samus squeeze her tits into a Morphball? Must be illogical and insulting.

He he, squeeze.

Store-Bayonetta-440x270

Obviously the worst most illogical unrealistic bad insulting character ever.

Yes, I’m being petty about this.
